What is Biomass?

Biomass refers to all renewable organic materials derived from living organisms. It is a form of energy in which solar energy is stored as chemical energy within biological matter. It is also considered the fourth largest energy source in the world after fossil fuels.

In a broad sense, biomass includes all materials derived from plants, animals, microorganisms, as well as their by-products and metabolic residues.

Common Types of Biomass Include:

  • Agricultural and forestry residues: rice straw, wheat straw, wood chips, branches, and fruit shells
  • Livestock and poultry waste: animal manure
  • Municipal solid waste: food waste, kitchen waste, paper waste, discarded food
  • Dedicated energy crops: sweet sorghum, reeds, energy forests, etc.

Key Characteristics

The most important feature of biomass is its renewability and carbon neutrality.

Plants absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis during growth. When biomass is utilized, the carbon released is approximately balanced by the carbon previously absorbed during growth, resulting in a near-neutral carbon cycle.

Compared with fossil fuels such as coal and oil, biomass is significantly more environmentally friendly and contributes to carbon reduction.

Diverse Applications

Biomass has a wide range of applications. It can be directly combusted for power generation and heat production, or processed into bio-natural gas, bioethanol, and biodiesel as substitutes for gasoline and natural gas.

It can also be converted into organic fertilizers, bioplastics, animal feed, and industrial raw materials.

A Green Energy Future

As a sustainable green resource, biomass not only helps solve agricultural and forestry waste disposal issues and reduces environmental pollution, but also replaces fossil fuels and supports carbon reduction and energy independence.

It is considered one of the most promising renewable energy sources for the future.
